John W. Thompson, Architect, P.A. is an architectural firm in Southport, NC, licensed as a professional corporation. The firm was founded in 1985 by John W. Thompson. In its 30-year history the firm has provided architectural services to a variety of clients across the state from Montreat in the mountains, Southern Pines and Elon College in the Piedmont, to the coastal plains region and beach communities.

The firm currently consists of its principal architect, John W. Thompson and Ruth B. Thompson, office manager. Firm size has varied over the years based on workload from two to six employees. The practice is personally oriented with John W. Thompson active in and responsible for every aspect of each project. John Thompson works with each client from beginning to end, including meetings, field work and construction administration.

Over the last few years the firm has become more proactive about the types of projects we are most interested in working on. This effort led us to generate three areas of focus: environment, community, and church.

First, we want to respect and preserve the natural environment by designing projects that are site specific, energy efficient and sustainable in materials and methods. We want to seek LEED certification for projects whenever possible. Second, we want to work on projects that have a beneficial impact on the community at large. Examples of such projects range from community centers to educational buildings to affordable housing developments. Finally, we have an interest in church design. John has a significant background in church architecture, design and construction. Churches have historically been centers for community activity and humanitarian operations, aiding both the physical and spiritual needs of people in the local society. We desire to help churches continue this ancient tradition through careful and creative design.
